This newspaper basket DIY shows you how to weave a basket out of newspaper strips. A cool up-cycling project that can be done by kids too! All you need is some old newspapers, thin cardboard, scissors and glue.
So shall we begin?
Newspaper Basket DIY – Instructions:
Quick note before we begin … there are a few other ways to make a newspaper basket – I’ve just chosen what I considered the easy one.
Step 1:
Take a typical broadsheet newspaper (29.5 X 23.5 inches) and cut it in half along its length.
Step 2:
Place a chopstick or a pencil on one corner of this piece and start rolling as shown.
Step 3:
As you keep rolling, remove the pencil and slowly keep rolling the paper. You can use glue sparingly to hold the roll intact.
Step 4:
When you finish rolling completely..
Step 5:
Make a few more such pieces. My basket consumed about 18 strips.
Step 6:
Take 8 strips and fold each one of them in half.
Step 7:
Cut them in half along the fold made. We will need around 16 such halved pieces.
Step 8:
Take a thin sheet of cardboard, fold in half and draw a circle. The diameter of the circle here is about 5 inches.
Step 9:
Cut along the outline to get two circle pieces.
Step 10:
On one circle, apply a good glue along the outline.
Step 11:
Start placing the halved strips as shown.
Step 12:
Place all the halved strips and press so that they stick well to the circle base.
Step 13:
No apply glue on the other circle and stick it on to the top. Place a heavy book for a few minutes to ensure that the base has been glued on well.
Step 14:
Lift up one strip.
Step 15:
Now take a long strip and glue it on to the base.
Step 16:
Take the strip backwards and bring it forward.
Step 17:
This way, take one strip backward and one strip forward alternatively.
Step 18:
Keep adding to the length of the strip bu inserting one into the other.
this way… So you could keep weaving with the strip.
Step 19:
As you weave, use glue once in a while to secure the weaves.
The basket as you weave…
Step 20:
The basket weaving is now done. We now have to secure the ends.
Step 21:
Cut the strip as shown.
Step 22:
Bend the strip downwards and applying glue tuck it in.
Can you see that its been tucked in?
Step 23:
Cut and tuck in all the strips to complete the basket.
Step 24:
Now paint the basket with an acrylic color of choice.
The basket is complete once the painting is done.
