Diya Decoration

Diwali is around the corner and decorating the diyas for lighting up the occasion is one fun activity to do. Many diyas are lit in and around the house and a very time consuming diya decoration for close to a hundred diyas, wouldn’t be the best option. So here are a few diya decoration ideas which can be done real quick to add an extra sparkle to your festive season.

Glimpse of the Result:

For this you will need:

  1. Diyas
  2. Acrylic colors (preferably metallic)
  3. Kundan/Rhine stones
  4. Glue
  5. Sparkle glue

How to decorate Diyas:

Step 1:

Take a diya (preferably a new one, mine was an old one which underwent some cleaning!) and remove any dust or impurities. The traditional diya made out of mud and clay is always the best.

Step 2:

Paint two coats of an acrylic color of choice and allow the coats to dry.

Step 3:

Using sparkle glue, make a simple pattern either in the inside or/and on the edges as per your design.

Allow the sparkle glue to dry.

Step 4:

Paste rhine stones using white glue or any other firm adhesive.

Once the stones are glued on firmly, you can use a little sparkle glue to enhance the design if needed.

A simple diya decoration is done. You can experiment with different colors and designs as per your whims and fancies.

Once you start lighting the diyas, there could be slight discoloration of the decoration, but nothing more. The time spent on the decoration is still worth it!

  1. These r pretty cheerful. I love these.

  2. Hello Ramya, You have such a nice touch in decorating objects. I painted a shelf for my sitting room last night and I wanted to put some embellishmnets on it but I was not really sure how. I tried to copy one of your simple designs and I had the hardest time. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can complete the side of my shelf in an easy fashion? You can see the photo of it on my website posting dated 10/8/2012.
Also do you have access to glitter glue? It comes in little bottles like paint and very easy to use rather than having to use glue then sprinkle in glitter.
Lasty…do you know of any place I might be able to get small METAL sequins? Not metallic but metal for embroidery. Thank you so much. I am so very glad I found your website. It is chock full of useful and inspirational information!
    Good Day to you

    • Hey Jaya, Thank you for your lovely comments! Just visited your blog and saw your work – its so neatly done!! nice colors and the elephant sure gives a royal/ethnic touch… maybe some small mirrors/pearl beads can adorn the elephant more. But honestly its quite nice the way it is!
And about the glitter glue (/sparkle glue), I frequently use it in many of my projects- as you said, very simple to use. ‘m not sure about the US but in India its easily available (Camel’s Fabrica 3D Glitter)… Sequins again, I buy it at a local craft store…!! Let me know if you need any other info. Hope to see many more of your ‘renovations’..!

  3. i try it on my school
