Sculptures – dimensions of artistic excellence

Sculptures are artworks which are made by carving out solid materials. Generally these could be stone,metal, wood or such hard substance. This art form is ancient and various temples and archaeological evidences suggest the primitiveness of this art form. The ancient sculptures were primarily made of stone.

There are many sculptures which are made of a single piece of stone and some which are made by carving out caves. Mamallapuram shore temple in India stands as a fine testimony to the artistic excellence of the sculptors of olden times. The below image is that of a sculpture in Mamallapuram carved out of a single stone.

Sculptures are also made from metals, the most common of them being bronze. One of the most famous modern day metal sculpture which has become the symbol of business across the globe is the bull sculpture at Wall Street.
